Research Associate, Human Factors in Smart Energy Systems

Full Time Salary (inclusive of London allowance): £32,055.00 to £38,744 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UCL Energy Institute is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to work on the human dimensions of energy demand, principally the requirements and behaviour of residential energy users. The position will support the development of human factors capability in the Institute. Candidates should have an interest in the human dimensions of energy demand, and in behaviour change as a mechanism of delivering emissions reductions. They should have a commitment to quantitative and qualitative social science, working alongside specialists from other disciplines. They should have a proven ability to complete research to a high standard, including data collection, statistical analysis and reporting.

The successful applicant will work principally on a new Consumer Response and Behaviour project but may also contribute to proposals for new research. The work will include literature reviews, development of the research programme, fieldwork within the UK, statistical analysis and reporting. The role also contributes to building the Institute’s capacity and profile relating to the human dimensions of energy demand. The post has funding for 17 months in the first instance.

Key Requirements:

The successful candidate will be a promising researcher with a  Doctoral qualification, or equivalent experience in quantitative and qualitative measurement and analysis of the human attitudes, understanding and behaviour. S/he will have a keen interest in research in energy demand spanning the human and physical sciences, with evidence of research capability in social science. The role requires the ability to take initiative in research, operate closely with an extended team and respond to urgent and complex challenges. A proven ability to undertake and complete research to a high standard, a track record of academic publishing, and an ambition to build an academic career would be an advantage.
